One of the best ways to see Maine's Northwestern Mountains Region is on a motorcycle. The Maine High Peaks Scenic Byway has some of Maine’s most varied and beautiful landscapes, making it incredibly popular for motorcycle touring.

On your ride north to Maine's Northwestern Mountains Region, visit The Wire Bridge in New Portland. Driving north, you will arrive in the New England Town of Kingfield. A stop for lunch at Longfellow’s Restaurant will reward you with the BEST lobster roll anywhere away from the Maine coast. Take time to check out other restaurants and shops for specialty foods and Maine Made products.

Your next stop for current information is Maine's Northwestern Mountains  Visitors Center in Carrabassett Valley across from Ayotte's Country Store. Our knowledgeable staff will be glad to tell you about events happening in Maine's Northwestern Mountains s Region.

As you proceed north, take a side trip to Sugarloaf Mountain – the largest ski mountain in the east. The Bag and Kettle Pub is a great spot for lunch and popular with the “locals”. If time permits, try a ride on the mountain ziplines or a chairlift ride up the mountain – Remember! You must walk down!

You will be crossing the Appalachian Trail in Wyman as you head north to the Village of Stratton. A great place for lodging is the Spillover Motel and enjoy dining at one of our several unique restaurants. A side trip on Route 16 from Stratton will bring you to Quill Hill with breathtaking 360° views of lakes, forests, and mountains along with directions to the Rangeley National Scenic Byway.

Just north of Stratton is the Flagstaff Lake Scenic Turnout with speculator views of Bigelow Mountain. Please take a picture of your visit and send us a copy at info@mainesnorthwesternmountains.com. If you are looking for that great Prime Rib or Steak, stop at Trail’s End Steak House, another “locals” favorite.

As you continue north along the North Branch of the Dead River on the Scenic Byway, stop at Sarampus Falls and Chain of Ponds before you continue to the Canadian Border Crossing. If you have your passport, you can cross the border and visit Lac-Mégantic before heading east to the Jackman Border Crossing and return home via the Old Canada Road (Route 201) National Scenic Byway.
